building your own 510 connector.

So,

I've looked through the threads and the female portion of the 510 connector seems pretty easy up until you get to the center pin. I'm going to be machining my own cap for a mod and getting the body portion of the connector is easy, it's the center pin that's giving me fits.

I figure I'll do my top plate out of stainless so the barrel of the connector will be stainless but the positive terminal or center pin needs to be isolated and apparently have a bit of counter pressure when the atty is screwed in. I'm not sure how to go about doing this. I can make a pin out of brass no problem but I don't know what to use as an isolator or how to really 'fit it all in' so to speak so it's durable, sealed, and isn't goign to just collapse and give me a crappy connection.

has anyone done this and care to share some tips?

MadVapes used to have a how-to on making a 510 connector; but that was a couple of website upgrades ago. I looked but didn't see anything there now. I think a nylon washer was used as the isolator.

A delrin bushing between the body and center pin should be sufficient. Check your insulator material for continuity before machining as i have had a couple plastics that were conductive enough to cause shorts when used as an insulating material.

I have not do this but have seen it done on a few home made mods.

try using a Silicone tube over our center post. I needs to have an OD that will fit in side your 510 connection but not to tight as to stop movement. Not to loos as to not let it fall out.

Machine some 3/8 delrin to 7mm and thread M7x0.5 (OD) Drill and tap the bushing to 8x32 and use a brass 8x32 screw as your centre post. Woila

I know a little padding will help with the contact of the center pin, do you think having it be completely solid like that in delrin is goign to potentially cause an issue with weak connections?

I am looking into making my own 510 connectors also but as of yet I have a bunch of other things on my plate to finish up first but I was looking at nylon screw insulators like these Amazon.com: nylon screw insulator: Industrial & Scientific I don't know if they would work or if you could find the right size as I haven't measured up a 510 connection yet. Worth a shot though and it sure beats silicone.

so you meant a number 8 screw at 32tpi Sorry, I've seen people using odd nomenclature all over this board so I had to double check

I'll be purchasing some delrin rods and turning them down on the lathe soon. Just gotta find an appropriate screw style and pick up a couple other taps and dies.

anyone happen to know the depths on a 510.? I know it's 7x.5 thread, drill it to 6.5mm thread it, then the top is bored at 7mm for airflow. What I don't know is how deep the air gap is, thread, and center pin. Scuba posted a diagram I'm still tryin to decipher.

My air gap is 1/32x1/32" The depth of thread is inconsequential as the center post is adjustable. The reason it is adjustable = lack of proper Chinese QA
