hey guys, so when i got my first mech mod about a month ago i ordered some efest 18650's for it. i went with efest because they seem to be the most popular and i had seen them the most throughout the internet, so i figured they must be the best. after dicing deeper into the mech mod realm i have heard and seen many references to sony and panasonic batteries among other brands. what do you guys think is the best 18650 battery to use for mech mods? i would like to stockpile a decent amount of batteries but whenever i get some dispensable income it usually goes to new vaping toys haha. i would like to just buckle down and get my devices the kind of batteries they deserve so what do you guys recommend?

There are many Very good batteries.
Best may be better considered as in - Best for my needs.

Sony is the new kid on the block for a powerful High Demand Battery.

For my needs, Panasonic CGR18650CH work just fine and last all day in most of my mods. I also have a few Efest in 18500 and some MNKE Bottom Run for Low ohm dripping. Note: I do not go below .5 ohm, generally .65up

Nope. Sony VTC5 is the best battery period. Look at the discharge graphs and you will see that it has:

1: The lowest voltage sag under high loading.
2: The longest battery life.
3: The highest margin of safety.
4: Safe chemistry.

Yes, other batteries can and will work, but none will work as well as VTC 5s do. Discharge tests to 2.5 v tell the whole tale, and the whole tale is that the AWs, Efests, and MNKEs don't last as long and sag a lot more than VTC 5s do. Test data analysis vs anecdotal analysis.

As an aside, the Sony VTCs are rated for discharge times well over 30 amps. Sony has safe discharge duration listings all the way up to 100 amps. No, it doesn't make them 100 amp batteries, but it does demonstrate the capability of the battery. You could just trust that unknown chemistry, manufactured by an undisclosed company, wrapped in an undisclosed location, subject to unkown (if any) test or quality controls, and sold as Efest/AW here in the USA capable of 30+ amp discharge. Choice is really pretty simple...

The AW brand is supposed to be among the best & is recommended in an article on this forum.

I use the AW 18490 IMR, but will likely replace it with the 18500 for the tab of extra length. Avoid buying these on eBay or online auctions, obtain from authorized distributors.

And stay away from all generic brands, they have great prices, but there are no way to know how safe they are because of this.

What is the lowest resistance you'll ever use?

For 18650s, I have used AW IMR 1600 and 2000 for a couple years. I recently switched over to Sony VTC5s, and won't go back. The AWs are ok, but for sub ohming, the Sonys are fantastic. AW are the best 18350s and 18500s. I never use 18350s, and only occasionally use 18500s.
As a side note, be careful when looking for batteries on the cheap. Batteries aren't something to scrimp on. Make sure they're authentic. There are lots of re wrapped counterfeits around. If you find an incredibly hard to believe low price, they're probably fake.

The Samsung 20Rs are the only 18650s I use, and they've been great. All the tests I've seen show them outperforming the Sonys in terms of voltage sag under load and in time holding the 4.2 - 3.7 voltage range, which is what really matters for an unregulated mech. Unless you're going below 0.2 ohms, that's what I would recommend.

Would love to see a graph from a respectable tester with VTC5s vs Samsungs using multiple discharge rates, unless something has drastically changed in the last month, VTC 5s > All.
