So I've had two of these now (Aspire X30/nautilus X), used both to successfully quit (and this time around, supplant - other habits) smoking. First one had a plastic base-plate on the battery, kept falling off cause it wasn't the right size for the screws. Ended up drunkenly putting it in someone else's jacket pocket after it ran out of battery. 6 months or so later, I remember I really don't like smoking. Went with what I know, got another X30, it's already paid its self back in the cost of tobacco. There are a few things I still struggle with.

First, it gurgles every time I refill it unless I blow through the mouth-piece. I've kinda accepted it as part of the process now but I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong for that to be necessary in the first place.

Second, I just replaced the coil for the first time, and got the wrong resistance (1.5Ω as opposed to 1.8) without realising. They are ostensibly made to work with the battery but it definitely changes the way it pulls and how it tastes. The battery's 4.50V and up til then I'd keep it set to ~15 Watts, which according to some chart is already deep in the realm of inefficiency. Referring back to it, against 4.50V/1.50Ω it lists the Wattage as 13.50W. Just had a blast on it at that setting and it's as good as I think it could get. Funnily enough, it seems to line up with my preferred setting on the 1.80Ω coil. So I guess the question now is, what are the benefits/disadvantages to coils of greater/smaller resistance? And are there any compatible with the nautilus X that go beyond 1.80Ω?

Third, all the liquids I've used (12-18mg nicotine) have had a starchy vegetable-y aftertaste and it gets to be kinda nauseating, are there any relatively cheap ones that don't, or effectively mask it? I'm on Grape and Watermelon and they're better than some of the others (Especially mentholated). These sweet fruity flavours have ruined the taste of coffee. Is there anything that doesn't? Are there any "neutral" flavours, or any tobacco flavours that actually match the sensation of inhaling freshly re-rolled Sterling dockers?

This isn't a always true rule, but as a general rule of thumb the lower the resistance the bigger the coil. The bigger the coil the more surface area (although, something like a flat wire will have more surface area than a round wire at the same resistance).

Bigger wires means more room for power.

4.5V @ 1.8 ohms is 11.5W
4.5V @ 0.17 ohms (my current build) is 119.12W

So, as a general summary:

Lower resistance = bigger coil

Bigger coil = more surface area and power (more vapor and more flavour; more juice and battery consumption; all this with significant diminishing returns)

To illustrate this:

The smaller coil with the wick on the left is something like 1.5-2.2 ohms, the bigger one on the right is something like 0.25 ohm.

Gurgling is typically a symptom of the tank flooding.

Flooding is a common occurrence in e-cigarettes. The definition of flooding is getting juice into the air passage of the tank. This can include any point between the mouth piece and the very bottom part that connects to the battery. Each tank has holes in that air passage, where the wick passes through. This is required for the device to work properly. Unfortunately, this opens up the possibility for flooding. The trick with flooding, is knowing how to avoid it. I’ll explain a little more, but a few common causes for flooding a tank include: improper filling, over filling, pulling too hard when hitting the device, and the temperature can even play a role and/or damage.

Before I get into the explanation, let me explain how an e-cig works a little more in depth. Nearly every tank has a wick that is used to absorb the juice in the tank. This wick cuts through the air passage. Typically, the wicks look like a wad of cotton in the tank. Each wick has a piece of wire that wraps around it in a coil. When you activate the button on the battery, you send electricity through the wire. As the wire heats up, it vaporizes the juice that is in the wick.

Improper Filling: When filling your tank, you have to be careful not to get juice into the center tube of the tank. This center tube is the air passage. When you take a draw, air comes from the bottom of the tank, through the air passage and into your mouth. If you get juice into this passage way, your tank is flooded.

Over Filling: If you over fill a tank (specifically a top coil like the ones that come with the starter kits and gift boxes), the wicks can become over saturated and just like a rain cloud, they will leak into the air passage. Once this happens, you have a flooded tank.

Pulling Too Hard: As I mentioned the wicks absorb the juice in the tank. As you pull on the device, you cause a vacuum effect that pulls juice into the wicks. If you pull too hard, you can pull in more juice then the coil can vaporize. If this happens, the juice leaks into the air passage and you have a flooded tank.

Temperature: E-Juice is a viscous liquid. Which means that as it warms up, it will thin out. And in the opposite form, it will thicken when it gets cold. When it thins, it is more difficult for the wicks to hold back the thin juice. This usually causes the wicks to over saturate and, you guessed it, it will leak into the air passage and you have a flooded tank.

Damage: There are o-rings and gaskets used that can wear out with usage. If certain ones fail or get lost, leaking will occur, in turn flooding the air passage and causing you to have a flooded tank. Other than accidentally losing something, damage can occur when its carried in a purse or a pocket or by over tightening the tank to the battery. Over tightening is a very common cause of leaking due to the damage it creates.

What are the benefits/disadvantages to coils of greater/smaller resistance?
In general terms ...

Lower Ohm Coils Will:
  • Thicker wire (more mass) heats slower than thinner wire
  • Produce More Vapor
  • Drain The Battery Faster
  • Use E-Juice Faster
  • Produce A Warmer Tasting Vape
Higher Ohm Coils Will:
  • Thinner wire (less mass) heats faster than thicker wire
  • Produce “Less” Vapor
  • Provide A “Cooler” Tasting Vape
  • Use Less E-Juice
  • Prolong Battery Life

There are no flavors that can match the taste of burning tobacco leaves. Most flavors are created by using concentrated flavoring agents that are also used in the food industry. Do you know of any food that tastes like a burning cigarette?

Many "tobacco" flavors may match the aroma or smell of a freshly opened pack of cigarettes, but they won't taste like a cigarette.

When filling be mindful of not getting any juice into the chimney. It can be tough with some tanks, I don't have that setup.

NETs (Naturally Extracted tobacco) juices are probably going to be your best bet. They're the closest thing to "tobacco" IMO because they use raw tobacco extract and it may be the closet to tobacco, although you won't get a "1:1" tobacco taste, you are vaping not burning, so the experience is different. Heather Heavenly vapes does have some NETs that are less gunky they may be worth a look.

Best of luck,

Anna

You definitely don’t want the gurgling. Too much liquid is flooding the coil. Make sure you don’t put liquid in the chimney when filling, and make sure you got everything in the right place, like o rings and what not (little rubber pieces that seal up the tank).

I vape at sub ohm levels. More vapor per hit, a warmer vape and I was able to lower my nicotine level in my eliquids this way. Draw back is that you need to do your research before entering sub ohm territory, you go through more liquid, faster, and you go through battery life faster.

Welcome and glad you joined.
Tobacco is a great flavor to start on, there was a time when I first started where tobacco was one of the main starting vaping flavors.
Might want to get to know some of the great tobacco tastes by visiting:
General E-Liquid Discussion and typing in search: "e liquid tobacco tastes".
