Using 30 gauge kanthal to get .5-.8 ohm style dual coils, is it normal? do other people do it? I usually for a .8 wrap 30 gauge to get a single 1.6 ohm coil, replicate it and boom .8 ohm build. but is it stupid to use 30 gauge to do so?
It depends what device you're using. I'm using a regulated device that only goes up to 15 watts.
I found (out of 28, 30, and 32) that 30 gauge was ideal, given only 7.5 watts per coil. 28 was OK, but a "primer hit" was absolutely necessary, given the start up time. It essentially doubled my battery life to switch to 30 gauge, since the coils got hot so much more quickly.
If you're giving 15+ watts to each coil, however, you'd probably want lower gauge wire.
I find that due to less wraps hot legs were much more frequent... Ive also snapped 30g while burning/cleaning the coils. But typically with .5 ohms or lower. My fav use of 30g is to twist it.
As long as it works it doesn't matter what gauge. Personally for low ohm builds, I really like 26 gauge. You wind up with a lot more surface area, and because of this, you get more flavor and vapor. On my bottom feeding Trident V2 on my Reo, I get a lot more vapor and flavor from a .37 ohm build with 26 gauge, than I did with a .28 ohm build with 28 gauge
