Are you sure Walgreens and Walmart have pharmaceutical grade?
I see a lot of USP food-grade products on their site, but no pharmaceutical grade.

Thanks.

Let's break this down because the stickys are confusing...

From most pure to least pure:
USP (This is United States Pharmacopeia which is the standard that pharmaceuticals are made to.)
Food Grade
Agricultural Grade
Industrial/Machine Grade

Now if you have USP, you can market it to any grade below USP since it already exceeds the purity standards of the lower grade. So you can call your USP PG or VG Food Grade, or Agricultural/Animal Grade, or Machine Grade, but it is still USP.

If you make Food Grade PG or VG you can say it is Animal Grade or Machine Grade, but not USP.

If you make Agricultural Grade, you can say it is Machine Grade, but not Food Grade nor USP.

So, when you see USP Food Grade, it means it is USP, but they are marketing it as Food Grade. This is a good idea because most folks wouldn't know that USP means pharmaceutical grade and wonder if it was safe to ingest like food, but if they add "Food Grade" the folks ignorant of what USP stands for will realize they can ingest it.

Just to make sure I understand it correctly, everything in the quote is wrong?

It is possible that a USP product can be either pharma grade or food grade. The USP designation only refers to a general production regime and does not cover the exact contaminants as long as the minimum standard is met. So a USP product might be considered safe for inhalation; or it might, on test, prove inadvisable to inhale. The only product that is guaranteed to be suitable for inhalation is a product that is (a) designated by the manufacturer as Pharmaceutical Grade, and that (b) also has a provable license for inclusion in a specific inhalable medicine. Needless to say this is virtually impossible to locate for the individual buyer. A vendor would be able to buy e.g. Dow Optim glycerine in quantity, for mixing down (or its PG equivalent), and be assured the material is suitable. This however doesn't take into account the nicotine base carrier PG or glycerine.

As a practical example, the FDA has warned that glycerine marked USP may contain toxic components from biodiesel byproduct manufacture, and currently there appears to be no way of determining whether or not a USP product contains biodiesel byproduct glycerine. Only synthetic pharma grade glycerine can be be assumed to be free of such contaminants at this time.

We've seen a lot of folks using Essential Depot. But we had a HORRIBLE experience with another one on Amazon (Foggy's Fog) - it killed the flavor in a huge batch and we had to toss over 5000mls of mixed juice.

And what Hoosier said is absolutely correct.

USP is always 'food grade', because 'food grade' is a grade lower than USP.

Thanks we2rcool,

Any other opinions/experience with essential depot/element six vg?

And you're right, Azure also support Hoosier's explanation:
Pharmaceutical standards, in common usage, are defined as to whether or not a given ingredient is certified to meet certain criteria, laid out by USP.
In short, if something is certified USP, it IS pharmaceutical standard, not merely food grade.

Walgreens and Walmart have USP VG and Tractor Supply has USP PG .

I'm still looking for USP vegetable glycerin in chain stores, unfortunately Walmart stores just carry glycerin (not from veggies) and Walgreens apparently doesn't carry that in stores (just online).

Any other suggestions?

I buy in bulk from essentials depot. Their VG has always been good for me. It burns fairly clean, and tastes very neutral. I don't use a ton of PG, but I have a bottle from them that I use to mix up juice for a friend, and she has never complained. Their prices are usually great too. I bought 2 gallons last week, 45 bucks, free shipping.

Propylene glycol is typically produced in two grades: technical or industrial grade, and USP/EP grade. The latter designates the requirements for the US Pharmacopiea and the European Pharmacopoeia, but this grade is also the grade for use in food, feed and personal care applications.

The production of propylene glycol USP/EP is seamlessly monitored and controlled through a track-and-trace system from the base material throughout the production process up to the point of delivery. The high product quality standards, and compliance with stringent hygiene conditions, qualifies propylene glycol USP/EP (pharmaceutical grade) for use in health-sensitive applications.

MSDS Technical Grade (Industrial)
Glycerin 99.5% Pure MSDS USP Grade
Glycerin 99.5% Pure

Industrial Grade Glycerine 99.5% is a high purity, vegetal or Tallow derived Glycerin. Glycerin is an integral part of both animal and vegetal triglycerides, from which it may be isolated and purified following hydrolysis.

Glycerin is a multifunctiona l polyol that delivers humectancy and freezing point depression, and may also provide viscosity reduction and/or skin protectant benefits to finished products. Industrial Glycerine 99.5% finds broad application over almost all personal care product categories as a humectant, freezing point depressant, and skin hydration agent. Typical use levels in everyday use moisturizing creams and lotions are 2 – 7%. Higher levels may be used for greater skin hydration.

Glycerin is listed on the US TSCA, EU EINECS, Canadian DSL, Japanese, Australian, Phskiilippines, Chinese, and Korean chemical inventories. It is classified as slightly water endangering and is not dangerous according to EU regulations (67/548/EEC – 88/379/EEC). It is not US DOT regulated for transport.

The abbreviation USP stands for United States Pharmacopeia, a document first published in 1820 by the Medical Society of New York State. Recognized as official by Congress in 1848, this document was used as a standard reference by physicians for p rescribing medicines. Today, the USP includes chemical descriptions, identifying tests, and purity tests, primarily for active ingredients. All materials listed in the USP are considered drugs by law and subject to all the U.S. Food & Drug Administration requirements pertaining to drugs. Labeling a product or a substance as USP implies that it conforms to all the legal requirements of the FDA and that i t was produced in accordance with the principles outlined in FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). A new edition of the USP is published every five years in the years ending in "0" and "5," with ongoing revisions and additions issued during the interim years. Many other nations also have compiled an official national pharmacopeia, similar in scope and content to the USP. Currently, there is a collaborative international program to harmonize the glycerin monographs in the USP and in the European Pharmacopeia, which may later be expanded to include other nations.

Obviously, Glycerin USP is the optimum choice for all applications requiring USP grade glycerin by FDA regulation. The USP designation on the label assures that the glycerin product is traceable by lot to the original manufacturer, is supported by documentation attesting to its compliance with USP standards of quality, and has been produced in accordance with GMP principles.

Download the PDF File MSDS Compliance with USP and FCC requirements means more than meeting the specifications given in the USP and FCC glycerin monographs as determined by analysis. It also means strict compliance with FDA regulations, most particularly with the procedures outlined in the current Good Manufacturing Practices to assure plant and equipment cleanliness and to avoid contamination during handling, distribution or packaging. Plants, warehouses and clean rooms, where repackaging is done, are subject to FDA inspection. Complete record keeping is obligatory to ensure that every shipment of product is traceable by lot number. A Certificate of Analysis also accompanies every shipment of USP and FCC glycerin.
