I'm new to dripping. Today I picked up a trident clone to try out. I'm not getting much vapor out of it. It has the dual coil setup it came with and it shows 1.7 ohms on my mvp2. I tried several different wattage settings, different airflow settings and I get hardly any
vape or flavor out of it. I'm using smooth criminal from Ahlusion. Not sure of the pg/vg. At first I put 5-6 drops on each wick and let it sit to saturate. Any help is greatly appreciated
Another late night, with nothing to do but type. ;-)
The thin fake Kanthal
coils and silica'ish wick that gets stuck in these inexpensive clones are the cheapest China crap. This is often the type of RDA that gets sold to new coil builders such as yourself - gives them something to test the waters with, to look at and try out... before they step off the ledge and build their own.
Not a bad entry level RDA actually... once you get better materials in them and an adequate amp supply, and perhaps drill out the air holes if you go below 1.0Ω.
You can retrofit cotton first... that might help a bit with the coils you have, but really... you'll want to recoil too.
Use the "Steam Engine" calculator (linked in my sig line) to "build" a coil (one is enough to get you started) that provides 1.3Ω+/- resistance... which is the lowest you can go with the MVP2 and still get a full resistance to amperage limit balance.
You
can go less resistance... but with the MVP2 3 amp limit, you may overtax the chipset.
That last bit was a bit presumptuous of me... in that I don't know what wire you have, if any at all. I suggest you buy some 28 and 30 gauge, genuine (will have a temco label) Kanthal A1 to get you started.
For example, a single 30 gauge compressed 8/7 wrap coil, wound on a 1.5mm (1/16") mandrel will give you 1.3Ω+/- resistance. If you want duals or a lower, sub-ohm resistance, two of the same coils will provide a 0.7Ω+/- net resistance.
With the latter, you'd need a PV that will provide at least 7 amps continuous drain (I've included a 1.3a margin of safety).
You'll get there... just be safe about it, and enjoy the new level of flavor.
